Milwaukee County Zoo

Had a great time at the zoo today with my boy. We've been talking about going to the zoo together since we started dating three years ago. We just never found the time or the weather was too hot or too cold or rainy or insert excuse here. Today we made the time and it was a lot of fun!

Milwaukee After Dark

Iconic landmark in Milwaukee, the Art Museum. Designed by Santiago Calatrava.

We were lucky that they were having a party last night and the wings were still open after dark. So I took advantage!

Greek Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup

I'm giving you the recipe this time! This is one of my favorites and it's a lighter soup, so I don't feel as weird having it in the warmer months as well as the colder ones.

Greek Lemon Chicken Orzo Soup

Servings ~ 4

Ingredients:
7 cups chicken broth (or equivalent in bouillon)
1 cup (uncooked) orzo
2 cups cooked, shredded chicken
4 large eggs
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 tsp ground white pepper

Directions:

1. Bring the broth to a boil in a large saucepan and add uncooked orzo. Cook until orzo is almost done.

2. Whisk together the eggs and lemon juice in a medium bowl. Whisk in 1 cup of the hot broth from the orzo (it's ok if some orzo gets in, but try not to get too much).

3. Whisk warmed egg mixture into the saucepan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the chicken and pepper and cook, stirring often, until chicken is heated through (1-2 minutes)

4. Serve and enjoy!

Memorial Day Weekend

We had our first fire of the year in the fire pit on Saturday. Such amazing weather!

We went for a walk on Sunday after grilling for dinner. I love eating outside when the weather is beautiful and there aren't any bugs yet.

Happy Memorial Day!

Red and Yellow Beauty

I've been meaning to get back on track fitness/health-wise for a while now. Last year for several months I did really well, but then some work travel and honeymoon/fun travel interrupted my schedule and I never really got back into it. I'm really good at coming up with excuses, but my main excuse is that I'm just lazy.

Well, this week I finally got my butt into gear. With the boy starting his internship full-time and starting work later in the morning, I asked him to go work out with me at our gym in the mornings. They always say it helps to have a workout buddy, and they're right. It's especially helpful when it's your fitness-oriented husband who likes to encourage you!

So for the last 3 days, we've dutifully crawled out of bed at 5:30am so we could head to the gym about 6. I won't say it's easy, but it is easier than when I first started this routine on my own a year and a half ago.

We also invested in a couple of Fitbit Ones to help track and I've started recording my food intake again in MyFitnessPal. The truth is I eat too much. But it's so tasty! But if I want to lose the weight I've gained back and more, I need to start eating better again. And working out will also help so I don't have to starve myself.

In that vein, when I needed to go to the post office tonight, I decided to walk (It's about 10 blocks one way). The weather is beautiful and I needed the extra exercise thanks to a "helpful" coworker and the donuts he brought in this morning. The boy went along with me and on our way back I spotted some tulips. The tulips have been just gorgeous this year - these were no exception - and I had to stop to take a picture.

Palms

I used some of my birthday money to buy some new pastels and today I got a chance to put them to work on a painting I was working on. What do you think?

I think this might be my best painting yet! I'm loving the results!

Cherry Blossoms and Final Papers

Yesterday, I took advantage of the beautiful weather to get a picture of the cherry blossom tree down the street that has finally started blooming. So pretty!

Today, after celebrating Mother's Day, the boy is working on his last paper for the semester. Here's to being done soon for 3 months!

Key Chain Colors

When the boy and I started traveling together more, we decided we wanted to collect something to remember our travels. Something small and relatively inexpensive. We decided on key chains. They're easy to find and are often unique to the place where you are.

My parents have always collected key chains and when I was small they were displayed around the top of the walls of the kitchen. I used to love to look at them and play with them.

I knew I wanted a way to display our key chains as well, but I wasn't too keen on putting a bunch of nails in the walls. (That's probably also why my parents never put theirs back up after we remodeled.) So I've just had the idea percolating in the back of my mind for many months now.

Last week we made a run to my favorite craft store and as I was looking around, I spotted this unfinished shadowbox.

Something about it caught my eye. If you've been paying attention, you know I've gotten into painting recently and I had a sudden desire to paint something fun like this. It also struck me at the same time that this would probably work to display our key chains as well. I didn't have a plan yet, but I bought it and took it home.

The first step was painting it. I didn't have a plan, just kind of went with what I was feeling at the time. Apparently I was feeling very colorful.

The next step was figuring out how to hang the key chains inside. This is where my engineering-minded brain comes in handy. The back board is too thin for nails, so I had to come up with something different. Digging through some of my miscellaneous craft supplies, I spotted some fun colored glass stones. With all the color on the box, I decided they would work well. I also dug through my bead supply and found some that I didn't think I'd use in any jewelry project that I could use to offset the stones from the back of the box. I wanted the key chains to be secure and not slip off the stones.

To attach them to the box, I used some strong glue that I had in my stash. After waiting for them to dry, I had finished my masterpiece.

And tonight, I hung it on the wall with all the key chains we've collected since we got married!
